Head of Pump Court Chambers, Crown Court Recorder and Visiting Professor of Law at City University. Senior Advocate of Nigeria with a broad international practice, bringing deep expertise in development, rule of law and high-stakes litigation in Africa.

Oba Nsugbe is Head of Pump Court Chambers and sits as a Crown Court Recorder. He has a broad international practice, with a particular focus on Africa.

He provides high-level advice and representation for individuals, corporate clients and organisations, including NGOs. His work includes major cases such as the record settlement awarded to a community in Africa following oil spills in the Shell–Bodo Community case. He also acts for families in a landmark fatal accident and product liability claim against Dana Airlines in the Federal High Court in Lagos and represents a UK charity in a constitutional challenge to the Same Sex Prohibition Act in Nigeria.

In addition, he is a Visiting Professor of Law at City University and serves as a Legal Assessor for the Medical Practitioners Tribunal Service. He is also the former Chair of the British Nigeria Law Forum (BNLF).

He has been awarded the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria. His international appointments have included membership of the Body of Benchers in Nigeria, Chair of the G50 business group (“investing in Nigeria”) and Fellow of the Nigeria Leadership Initiative.

Oba brings extensive experience of legal processes at the intersection of development and the rule of law.
